In Part 1, we took apart the speed camp myth. 70% of kids quit organized sports by 13, early specialization does more harm than good, and the marketing machine selling "elite development" to nine-year-olds is mostly fiction.
In Part 2, we talked about the window. The developmental years when movement, coordination, and physical confidence are built best, and how that window is closing for a lot of kids while we argue about which sport to push them into.
So now the obvious question. If speed camps aren't the answer, and the window is real, what does the right thing actually look like?
This is that post. No philosophy this time. Just a clear look at how we built our youth programs, why there are three of them, and what your kid actually does when they walk through the door.
Why Three Programs and Not One
Something we will often see in youth programs is they will run one "kids fitness" class and let a 5 year old and a 14 year old do basically the same thing, scaled up or down. A little lighter for the little ones, a little heavier for the big ones.
Looking at research, this method is backwards.
A child is not a small adult. A 5 year old is not a small 14 year old. Their bodies, brains, and emotional needs are completely different, and the way they should be trained is different in kind, not just degree. The methodology we use, the Brand X Method, says it plainly: a program for children "is not an adult program modified for children." It's built from the ground up for how kids actually develop.
That's why we have three programs. Not three because it sounds nice on a schedule. Three because there are genuinely distinct developmental stages, and each one needs its own approach. Brand X calls them Explore, Express, and Excel. We call them Ardent Tots, Ardent Kids, and Ardent Youth. They're built to grow with your child, handing them off from one stage to the next as they're ready.
We will break down each one.
The Shape of Every Session
Before I get into the age groups, you should know that every session, no matter the age, follows the same three-part structure. Brand X calls it Prepare, Practice, Play. It's the backbone of everything we do with kids.
Prepare is the warm-up, but it's doing a lot more than getting them loose. It's a physical literacy block. Running forward and backward, skipping, carioca, side shuffles, lunges with holds, squats at different heights, planks, agility hops, dot drills, balance work like airplanes and pendulums, mobility through the bottom of a squat. This is where coordination and body awareness get built, disguised as a warm-up.
Practice is the skill work. This is where coaches check whether a kid can hit the key positions of a movement, then work with them on whatever they can't do yet. For older kids, this is where real strength training happens, using a progression model that's been tested for over two decades.
Play is the part that makes it stick. Games, free movement, exploration, problem-solving with the body. It's not a reward tacked onto the end. It's deliberately built in, because play is how kids develop. Games like Hillbilly Basketball and dozens of others give them the chance to experiment, improvise, and find their own movement solutions while having an absolute blast.
Prepare, Practice, Play. Every session. Scaled to the age and stage of the kid in front of us.
Ardent Tots: Explore (Ages 4 to 6/7)
This is where it starts. And at this age, it's all about exploration.
Our youngest kids are in what Brand X calls the Explore stage. The whole goal is motor pattern development through play and experimentation. We're not coaching technique in any serious way. We're guiding little humans to discover what their bodies can do.
A Tots session is movement, games, and fun. Bear crawls over walls of boxes. Keeping beach balls in the air. Crawling, jumping, rolling, throwing, balancing, climbing. If you peeked in, it would look like organized chaos. Joyful, sweaty, giggling chaos. But underneath it, every game is building a specific foundation. Coordination. Spatial awareness. The confidence that comes from figuring out a physical problem on your own.
When we teach a Tot to press something overhead, there's nothing in their hands. The cue is playful: "Grab your ears, drop your thumbs to your shoulders, look like a strong tree, and push the ceiling up." That's it. We're embedding the motor pattern, not loading a movement. The weight comes years later, if and when their body is ready.
"You cannot express what you don't possess."
The Tots stage is about one thing above all: helping a kid fall in love with moving. Because as the Brand X philosophy puts it, everything that comes later is built on the base we lay right here.
Ardent Kids: Express (Ages 7/8 to 10/11)
This is where the foundation starts to be expressed as capability.
Our middle group is in the Express stage. The motor patterns they explored as little kids now get refined, challenged, and built upon. The play is still front and center, but it gets more deliberate, and we start introducing light external load. Medicine balls, sandbags, light dumbbells, plates.
A Kids session keeps the energy of Tots but adds intention. They play games like Plate Jump, Knock Stuff Over, and Strongman Pedestal, where they're learning to deadlift, clean, carry, and press real objects with real movement quality, but inside a structure that still feels like play. The cognitive load goes up. The physical load goes up. The fun stays exactly where it was.
Back to that press example. In the Kids stage, we still start with nothing in their hands. Same playful cues as Tots, but with a little more refinement. "Push the ceiling up, it's heavy." Only when their technique is genuinely clean do we add a dumbbell. We never rush it. The movement comes first, always. You may have heard us say in the adult class, "Put your head through the window and look outside." That cue came from coaching kids.
This is the stage where kids become physically literate and, just as importantly, motivated. They're building a peer group, learning to encourage each other, and discovering that they're capable of more than they thought. That combination, competence plus confidence, is what carries them into the next stage and into whatever sports or activities they choose.
Ardent Youth: Excel (Ages 11 to 15/16)
This is where it all comes together, and where the training starts to look like real training.
Our oldest group is in the Excel stage. By now they have years of movement foundation underneath them, and we boost it. This is where we teach the real lifts. The squat, the deadlift, the press, the clean. Built carefully, from the ground up, using methods rooted in Starting Strength.
And here's the key. We are not chasing weight on the bar. We are building perfect positions. Because the goal isn't to impress anyone with how much a 13 year old can lift. The goal is that when this kid walks into a high school weight room and a coach hands them a barbell with little or no instruction, they already know how to move safely. That's not just performance. That's injury prevention for the next decade of their life.
The press progression tells the whole story. A Youth athlete starts with empty hands, just like the little kids. Then dumbbells, once technique permits. Then, and only then, a barbell. With a barbell we add cues like "brace before you press" and "pull your chin out of the way." We teach with dumbbells before a barbell specifically to avoid the complexity of the bar path until the movement is perfect.
And we know what not to do, too. Some movements, like the push jerk, are simply not developmentally appropriate for younger kids, so we don't teach them until a kid reaches this stage and has earned the foundation to do them safely. Knowing what to leave out is just as important as knowing what to put in.

At this stage, competence and confidence turn into something bigger. That's how Brand X describes the goal, and that's what we're after. Not just strong kids. Capable, confident young people who trust their bodies and aren't afraid to try.
How a Kid Moves Through It
The three programs are designed to grow with your child. Most kids move up as they hit the next age range, but development isn't a calendar. Every kid is different, and we assess each one individually to make sure they're in the program that fits where they actually are, not just how old they happen to be.
A kid who starts in Tots at 5 and is still with us in Youth at 14 has spent close to a decade building physical literacy the right way. Layer by layer. Stage by stage. This is the difference between a kid who tolerates exercise and a kid who is genuinely, physically confident for life.
One Coach, the Whole Way
All three programs are run by our Head Coach, Lexi, who holds youth-specific certifications from Brand X and the American College of Sports Medicine, on top of a degree in kinesiology and her work as a certified exercise physiologist. We talked more about her and the philosophy behind all this in Parts 1 and 2, but the short version is this: having one consistent coach who understands the entire progression, from a 4 year old's first bear crawl to a 15 year old's first clean, means your kid is in expert hands at every single stage. Nobody falls through the cracks between programs, because there are no cracks. It's one continuous journey, coached by someone who knows exactly where your kid has been and exactly where they're going.
This Is the Part Where You Decide
Here's the thing about that window we talked about in Part 2. It's open right now. Not next year. Not when things slow down. Now.
Our summer youth program spots are limited. We keep our classes small on purpose, because that's what good coaching requires. When they're full, they're full.
